Which Supermarket Has the Cheapest Petrol in the UK?

We pulled live prices from over 1,500 supermarket forecourts. Here is who actually wins on petrol, diesel and super unleaded.

Every penny counts at the pump right now, and supermarket forecourts are consistently cheaper than branded stations like BP, Shell and Esso. But which supermarket actually wins on price? We pulled live data from over 1,500 supermarket forecourts across the UK to find out.

Unleaded petrol (E10)

  • 1Morrisons154.3p340 stations
  • 2Tesco154.5p516 stations
  • 3Sainsbury's154.6p315 stations
  • 4ASDA154.9p321 stations

All four supermarkets are within less than a penny of each other on unleaded. Morrisons edges it, but the difference between the cheapest and most expensive is just 0.6p per litre. On a 50 litre fill, that is a saving of 30p. You are unlikely to drive past a Tesco to get to a Morrisons on that basis alone.

Diesel (B7): Morrisons pulls ahead

  • 1Morrisons187.0p
  • 2Sainsbury's187.2p
  • 3Tesco187.3p
  • 4ASDA188.0p

If you drive a diesel car, Morrisons is the clear winner. On a 60 litre diesel fill, choosing Morrisons over ASDA saves around 60p.

Super unleaded (E5)

  • 1Tesco164.0p
  • 2Sainsbury's166.6p
  • 3Morrisons170.8p

Not all supermarkets offer super unleaded. Tesco wins comfortably here, coming in nearly 7p cheaper than Morrisons.

What about ASDA Express?

ASDA Express forecourts, typically found on smaller convenience sites rather than main superstore locations, are noticeably more expensive than full ASDA superstores. E10 at ASDA Express averages 158.6p versus 154.9p at a main ASDA store. If you have the choice, always go to the main superstore.

The verdict

For most drivers filling up with E10 unleaded, it genuinely does not matter which supermarket you choose. They are all within a penny of each other, so fill up wherever is most convenient. If you drive diesel, Morrisons is your best bet. If you use super unleaded, head to Tesco.

The real saving is not picking one supermarket over another. It is choosing any supermarket over a branded forecourt, where prices typically run 5p to 10p per litre higher for the same fuel.
