Which Supermarket Has the Cheapest Petrol in the UK?

We pulled live prices from over 1,500 supermarket forecourts. ASDA wins on E10, Tesco on diesel and super unleaded, and the gaps are tiny.

Every penny counts at the pump, and supermarket forecourts are consistently cheaper than branded stations like BP, Shell and Esso. But which supermarket actually wins on price? We pulled live data from over 1,500 supermarket forecourts across the UK to find out.

Unleaded petrol (E10)

  • 1ASDA£1.544321 stations
  • 2Tesco£1.547516 stations
  • 3Sainsbury's£1.548316 stations
  • 4Morrisons£1.553340 stations

All four supermarkets are within less than a penny of each other on unleaded. ASDA edges it, but the difference between the cheapest and most expensive is just 0.9p per litre. On a 50 litre fill, that is a saving of 45p. You are unlikely to drive past a Tesco to get to an ASDA on that basis alone.

Diesel (B7): Tesco pulls ahead

  • 1Tesco£1.833
  • 2Morrisons£1.842
  • 3ASDA£1.845
  • 4Sainsbury's£1.850

If you drive a diesel car, Tesco is the clear winner this month. On a 60 litre diesel fill, choosing Tesco over Sainsbury's saves around £1.

Super unleaded (E5)

  • 1Tesco£1.642
  • 2Sainsbury's£1.668
  • 3Morrisons£1.708

Not all supermarkets offer super unleaded. Tesco wins comfortably here, coming in over 6p cheaper than Morrisons.

What about ASDA Express?

ASDA Express forecourts, typically found on smaller convenience sites rather than main superstore locations, are noticeably more expensive than full ASDA superstores. E10 at ASDA Express averages 156.4p versus 154.4p at a main ASDA store. If you have the choice, always go to the main superstore.

The verdict

For most drivers filling up with E10 unleaded, it genuinely does not matter which supermarket you choose. They are all within a penny of each other, so fill up wherever is most convenient. If you drive diesel, Tesco is your best bet right now. If you use super unleaded, head to Tesco.

The real saving is not picking one supermarket over another. It is choosing any supermarket over a branded forecourt, where prices typically run 5p to 6p per litre higher for the same fuel.
