Scottish fuel prices reflect distance more than any other UK country. Central-belt supermarkets in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Stirling stay competitive with English averages, while Highland and island forecourts often sit 10–15p higher. Stornoway, Lerwick, and Kirkwall regularly rank among the most expensive postcodes in the UK because of the cost of moving fuel by ferry.

Scotland fuel prices: questions

Why is fuel so much more expensive in the Highlands and Islands?+

Most island and remote-Highland forecourts pay considerably more for fuel deliveries, which arrive by tanker ferry or long-haul road. There's also far less competition: a single station may serve a whole island. The Rural Fuel Duty Relief scheme returns 5p per litre to retailers in eligible areas, but it doesn't fully close the gap.

Where is the cheapest petrol in Scotland right now?+

It varies day to day, but the cheapest unleaded is almost always at a supermarket forecourt in the Central Belt. The stats card at the top of this page shows the current cheapest E10 and diesel station in Scotland, updated hourly.

Are Scottish supermarket forecourts cheaper than independents?+

Typically yes in cities and towns where supermarkets compete with each other. In rural Scotland the picture flips, with independents sometimes the only option, and pricing reflects the lack of competition.

How often do these Scottish fuel prices update?+

Hourly. Every retailer is required by law to report price changes within 30 minutes, and we pull the official UK Government Fuel Finder feed every hour.
