Why is fuel so much more expensive in the Highlands and Islands?+
Most island and remote-Highland forecourts pay considerably more for fuel deliveries, which arrive by tanker ferry or long-haul road. There's also far less competition: a single station may serve a whole island. The Rural Fuel Duty Relief scheme returns 5p per litre to retailers in eligible areas, but it doesn't fully close the gap.
Where is the cheapest petrol in Scotland right now?+

Are Scottish supermarket forecourts cheaper than independents?+
Typically yes in cities and towns where supermarkets compete with each other. In rural Scotland the picture flips, with independents sometimes the only option, and pricing reflects the lack of competition.
